4. What you can do in this DEMO version
---------------------------------------------
(a) Summary
- Play single player scenarios of varying map sizes as Orcs or Humans.
(note: These scenarios are custom made for this release only.)
- Watch a slide show illustrating some of the features in the full retail version.
- Watch a slide show version of the Intro movie.
- Sample some of the buildings.
- Sample some of the land, sea and air units.
- Harvest all of the resources: Gold, Lumber and Oil.
- See how the new "Fog of war" works.
(b) To build a building:
1. Click on a peasant/peon and then click on either the BASIC or ADVANCED structures icon.
2. Move the cursor over the building icons and the required amount of resources will appear in the lower right of the game screen.
3. Select desired building and the cursor will change into a rectangle.
4. The building may be placed in any valid terrain type in an area previously explored or currently visible.
5. When the cursor square is not entirely green, the current location highlighted is not valid to build on. The area of the square that flashes red is unbuildable.
6. Click when the cursor square is over the desired building location. A peasant will then head to that destination to begin construction of that building.
(c) How to harvest oil:
1. Construct an Oil tanker from the Shipyard.
2. Seek out an oil pool and move the oil tanker so that it is on top of or adjacent to it.
3. Build an oil platform by clicking on the tanker, selecting the BUILD OIL PLATFORM icon and then placing it in the desired location.
4. Once the platform is completed, the tanker will begin transporting oil back to your closest Shipyard or Oil Refinery.
(d) Controlling game speed:
Pressing PLUS/MINUS keys will speed up and slow down the speed of the game.
---------------------------------------------
5. What you can build
---------------------------------------------
Some units and/or buildings require other buildings to exist before they can be constructed. An example of this is the Elven Archer who needs a Barracks and a Lumber Mill. If any of these buildings do not exist, then Archers may not be trained at the Barracks.

6. The scenario/map/unit editor
---------------------------------------------
The full retail version includes a scenario editor allows you to lay out Warcraft maps, place buildings and units, and modify unit attributes including hit points, armor and strength, and a sound effects editor which allows you to replace virtually every sound effect in the game with whatever you like.
---------------------------------------------
7. Playing over the Internet
---------------------------------------------
The full retail version of Mac Warcraft 2 can play against other Mac copies of Warcraft 2 over the internet using the TCP/IP connection mode.
However, to play against IBM Warcraft 2 over the internet, a third-party product called KALI will be needed. KALI is a utility which simulates an IPX network for multiplayer games over the Internet. This is needed because the IBM version of Warcraft 2 does not have direct TCP/IP support in it.
The Macintosh version of KALI is near completion and will be available at the below sites when it is finished.
The following Web and FTP sites are the official KALI sites:
http://www.axxis.com/kali
http://www.kali.net/
ftp://ftp.kali.net/pub/kali/
ftp://ftp.axxis.com/pub/kali/
For more information about KALI, contact its author, Jay Cotton (jay@kali.net).

10. TROUBLESHOOTING
---------------------------------------------
Two Player Games
To play a two-player game, you will want to use the built in modem or direct link support, or "AppleTalk ADSP tool" or get MacIPX for network play.
The full version of Warcraft II has built-in support for Modem, Direct Link, AppleTalk and TCP/IP networking, and will ship with Novell's MacIPX for playing against IBM's on a network.
Modem
Modem Init Strings
For best performance you will want to disable compression and error control on your modem. Here are some init strings for popular modems that we have found to work well.
MOST HAYES COMPATIBLES:
AT &K0 M1 S46=0 &D2 &Q6
US ROBOTICS Mac & Fax, Sportster:
CLEAR string set to:AT &F1
AT &K0 M1 &M0 &D2
If the above stirngs fail to work
CLEAR string set to ATZ
INIT string set to ATZ
If ATZ fails, then you will need to contact your modem manufacturer and get an Init string that disable Data Compression and Error Correction.
Direct Link
The Serial Tool is provided primarily for Mac-IBM games. We do not recommend using the Serial Tool for Mac to Mac connections, as Mac null-modem cables are extremely hard to find.
First you will need two cables: A Mac-Modem cable (MiniDin 8 male – DB 25 Male) and a PC "null-modem" cable (DB 25 Female – DB9/DB25 Female to fit PC Com port). Plug the Mac-Modem cable into the Mac, plug one end of the null-modem cable into the Mac-modem cable, and then the other end of the null-modem cable into the PC. Set the Mac to Baud Rate 9600
MacIPX
Warcraft II also supports the IPX protocol. IPX originated with Novell, and many IBM compatible computers are on Novell networks. You can play Macintosh to Macintosh using IPX, but the primary purpose of IPX is to play Warcraft between a Mac and an IBM on an Ethernet network. Warcraft uses MacIPX to communicate using IPX protocols.
Your IPX connection is set up from the MacIPX Control Panel, not from Warcraft. Open the MacIPX Control Panel, and chose the icon for the appropriate type of network (usually Ethernet). Double-click this icon, and make sure that the Frame type is set to the frame type that your IPX network uses. The MacIPX Control Panel only needs to be configured once.
You can get MacIPX from Novell at: <http://support.novell.com/Ftp/Updates/mac/LDate0.html>
Select the latest version of "Network Client for Mac OS" and download it. After you have expanded the files use the installer to do a Custom Install of MacIPX, you do not need to install any of the other components.
AppleTalk ADSP Tool:
Simply put the AppleTalk ADSP tool included in this archive in your extensions folder. Then when you start the Demo it will be an option under the Communications Toolbox connection method.
Two start a two-player game using the AppleTalk ADSP tool, make sure that both computers are connected to an AppleTalk network (LocalTalk, EtherTalk, or so on), that AppleTalk is turned on in the Chooser, and that the Network connection in the Network Control Panel is proper (these are the cause of most problems with AppleTalk connections).
The Answering player can just click OK, or alternatively can edit the name in the Local Name field; this name is what the Calling player sees, and defaults to the user name for that computer (see the Sharing control panel). The Answering player must click OK in this dialog before the Calling player will see the opponent's name as ready for connection.
The Calling player clicks on the name of the player (in the list box on the right) to play against, and clicks OK. If playing on a large network, the list box on the left shows all the zones on the network; select a zone to see any Warcraft players in that zone. If the Calling player does not see any names, it may just be that the Answering player has not clicked his OK yet to start waiting.
Since this is the Electronic Demo version of Warcraft II, the "Enable CD Audio" Option in the Sound Options Dialog is permanently disabled. A CD Audio soundtrack is included with the full retail version of Warcraft II.
